Hakan joins Inter

MILAN, July 6 (Reuters)(DS) - Turkey striker Hakan Sukur formally completed his move from Galatasaray to Inter Milan on Thursday as Italian clubs continued to trade heavily ahead of the new Serie A season. Hakan said he had kept a promise to return to Italy after a brief and unhappy spell with Torino in 1995. He quit the Turin club after just five league games. "I said when I left Italy that I would only return for a great club." Hakan joined an impressive Inter attacking roster wich includes Christian Vieri, Ivan Zamorano, Alvaro Recoba, Adrian Mutu and injured Brazilian Ronaldo. He is well aware that he will not be guaranteed a starting spot. "I chose Inter because I like difficult challenges and although I know that I will have to fight for a place in the team I have faith in myself," said Hakan. Inter gave no financial details of the deal but Italian media have reported that the 28-year-old cost around 12 billion Italian lire ($5.92 million).

Turkey reach quarter-finals

BRUSSELS, June 19th (Reuters)(DS) - Turkey caused the upset of Euro 2000 on Monday by beating co-hosts Belgium 2-0 to qualify for the quarter-finals thanks to two goals from Galatasaray striker Hakan Sukur. It was Turkey's first win in the European championship finals. Belgium's failure to qualify will be a bitter disappointment to Belgian fans who bathed in "Europhoria" after their side won the tournament's opening game 2-1 against Sweden. Italy, who had already won group B, beat Sweden 2-1 on Monday. Turkey will now play Portugal in Amsterdam on June 24. Belgium's goalkeeper Filip de Wilde made his second bad mistake of the tournament to give Turkey their first goal in the dying seconds of injury time at the end of the first half. His misery was made complete when he was sent off in the 84th minute for a bad foul outside the penalty area on Arif Erdem. "We made mistakes for both goals but we played the better game," Belgian coach Robert Waseige said. "De Wilde played very well until the first goal and I wouldn't blame him for the goal either. The defence should have dealt with the ball before it bounced," Waseige said. "That's football. You have to know how to win and lose." Belgium will rue missing a hatful of chances and Turkey have their goalkeeper Rustu Recber to thank for pulling off two glorious point-blank saves to keep his side ahead. Belgium lived up to their promise to come out and attack the Turks, and Emile Mpenza went close to opening the scoring twice in the first three minutes, with shots that went just wide. The Schalke 04 striker did get the ball in the net after 24 minutes, but was ruled offside as he put in the rebound from a Nilis shot.

Belgium leave Gaps

BRUSSELS, June 19th (Reuters)(DS) - The home side made most of the early running, creating a series of chances wich they failed to convert. But as they went forward, they left themselves exposed at the back and it was only lax finishing which prevented the Turks taking the lead earlier. In the fourth minute of the first half, De Wilde totally misjudged a ball lobbed high into the box. Sukur got there first to head home as the ball bounced. Belgium came back at the Turks as the second half got under way but as they pushed forward, Tayfur Havutcu sprung the Belgian offside trap, played it to Suat Kaya, who found Sukur unmarked to slot the ball home. Belgium threw on a series of attackers to try to break down the Turkish defence, but the Turks grew increasingly assured as time went on. Play was held up shortly before halftime when referee Kim Milton Nielsen had to leave the field with a groin strain. He was replaced by fourth official Guenter Benko.

Turkey knock out co-hosts in huge upset

ISTANBUL, June 19th (Reuters)(DS) - Turkey achieved the greatest result in their soccer history by beating Belgium 2-0 on Monday to reach the Euro 2000 quarter-finals, knocking out the co-hosts in the process. Turkey's victory, their first in the finals in six matches and secured by a goal in either half from Hakan Sukur, caused one of the biggest upsets since the competition began in 1960 and it crowned a sensational month for Turkish soccer. On May 17 Galatasaray lifted the UEFA Cup to become the first Turkish team to win a European club competition and this result confirms that victory was no flash in the pan. The win was achieved with half the Galatasaray team and no matter what happens in the quarter- final against Portugal on Saturday, the team will go home with their heads held high after heavy criticism from fans earlier in the tournament. "This is the best achievement in 77 years of Turkish soccer history. Those who criticised the team and myself forgot we had an open return ticket home," coach Mustafa Denizli said. "This is a great gift for the whole of Turkey. This is a victory for the whole Turkish nation."

Shattering Blow

ISTANBUL, June 19th (Reuters)(DS) - The result represents a shattering blow for Belgian soccer who rode a wave of "Europhoria" after winning the tournament's opening match 2-1 against Sweden. They finished the match with 10 men after goalkeeper Filip De Wilde, who has had a nightmarish tournament, was sent off in the 84th minute for a reckless assault on Arif Erdem. The goalkeeper rushed out of his area like a man possessed and stuck his arm into Erdem's neck when he realised he had mistimed his run and Erdem had the beating of him. It was his second calamity of the match after gifting Turkey their first goal in injury time at the end of the first half when he totally misjudged the fight of a high ball into his box. Sukur headed home. It was the second time De Wilde had made a bad mistake in front of his own supporters at the King Baudouin Stadium. He gifted Sweden a goal in the opening match too by stepping on the ball in the process of clearing it -- but at least Belgium, 2-0 up at the time, held on to beat Sweden. This time there was no escape but there was forgiveness as manager Robert Waseige shook him by the hand before he disappeared down the tunnel to the jeers of the Belgian fans. "De Wilde played very well until the first goal and I wouldn't blame him for the goal either. The defence should have dealt with the ball before it bounced," Waseige said. But the goalkeeper was desolate. "We are deeply disappointed and for me personally it's terrible. Two bad mistakes in three games at this level is way too many," he said. After a positive start to the tournament, Belgium lost to Italy 2-0 and are now out of the competition.

Turkey's Hakan Sukur to join Inter Milan

MILAN, Italy, June 12 (Reuters) - Inter Milan said on Monday they  had reached a deal to bring Turkish striker Hakan Sukur from UEFA Cup holders Galatasaray. Sukur's current contract expires at the end of June and he will sign for Inter after the end of the European championship on July 2, the club said on their official website. Sukur had a brief and unsuccessful spell in Italy in 1995, playing five matches for Torino before returning to Galatasaray. He has been linked to Juventus and AC Milan in recent seasons. The top scorer in the Turkish first division for the last three years, he led Turkey's attack in their 2-1 Euro 2000 defeat by Italy on Sunday.

Galatasaray make history with UEFA-CUP win

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, May 17 (Reuters)(DS) - Galatasaray became the first Turkish club to win a European soccer trophy when they beat Arsenal 4-1 on penalties after the UEFA Cup final finished goalless after extra time on Wednesday. Galatasaray overcame the loss of their influential playmaker Gheorghe Hagi, who was sent off for hitting Arsenal skipper Tony Adams in the 93rd minute, to win the final wich saw both teams miss golden opportunities. In the end Galatasaray won in the shootout when Gheorghe Popescu, Hagi's brother-in-law, lashed in the decisive penalty after Croatian substitute Davor Suker and French midfielder Patrick Vieira had both hit the woodwork with their kicks.
The shoot-out tipped Galatasaray's way when Ergun Pembe scored the opening penalty and Suker hit Claudio Taffarel's left-hand post. Hakan Sukur, Umit Davala and then Popescu all scored for Galatasaray while Ray Parlour was the only Arsenal player to score from the spot. Arsenal, who won the 1994 European Cup Winners' Cup at the same Parken Stadium, started the match the better side but Galatasaray, with Hagi a huge influence, gradually fought their way back and had two great chances to score on either side of halftime. The first came when Arif Erdem sprung the offside trap but shot wide with only David Seaman to beat. The second came three minutes when Hakan Sukur, under pressure from Martin Keown, hit a post after 48 minutes. Keown could have scored at the other end a minute later but sidefooted over the bar. Arsenal's best chances came in extra time after Hagi's dismissal. The best to Thierry Henry in the 107th minute when he seemed set to score what would have been the golden goal winner -- only for his close-range header to be turned away brilliantly by Taffarel. The Brazilian World Cup keeper also did well to deny Nwankwo Kanu soon after and was named Man of the Match afterwards. It is the second time Arsenal have lost a European final on penalties following their defeat by Valencia in the 1980 European Cup Winners' Cup final, which also finished goalless. But their manager, Arsene Wenger, was unhappy that the referee chose to stage the shoot-out at the end of the ground occupied by Galatasaray fans. "I believe it was a huge advantage to play at the Turkish end, I think it be a toss, not a choice of the referee," he said. "The penalties we missed both hit the woodwork - it shows that the biggest players in the world miss penalties," added the Frenchman. There were no major disturbances in the ground after a day of violence between opposing fans in the centre of Copenhagen.

Turkey cheers Galatasaray victory

ISTANBUL, May 18 (Reuters)(DS) - Tired Turks woke with pride and an element of disbelief on Thursday after a night of celebrating their first European soccer club championship. "This is how history is written," said the newspaper Sabah in a banner headline. Club rivalries were forgotten for the night as Turkish fans united behind Istanbul club Galatasaray in their UEFA Cup final against England's Arsenal. The streets erupted into a cacophony of car horns, fireworks, gunfire and singing when the Turkish champions beat Arsenal 4-1 on penalties after the two sides had battled to a scoreless draw at the end of extra time. Celebrations went on well into the night. "They were down to 10 men, they were undaunted. They did not forget that 65 million Turks were behind them," wrote Sabah. "They played with honour, pride and belief. They presented the UEFA Cup to the Turkish people." "Galatasaray did the unbelievable," said the newspaper Hurriyet. Nine people, including a three-year-old, were being treated for bullet wounds in Istanbul after being accidentally shot as revellers fired pistols and guns in celebration. Two were wounded in the southeastern town of Batman. Turkish teams, once the whipping boys of European soccer, have been increasingly successful in recent years. Turkey's politicians, meanwhile, are still battling with a roller-coaster economy and shaky human rights record to gain European Union membership after decades of trying. "Not in the economy and human rights, but we are the best in Europe at soccer," said the liberal paper Yeni Binyil. "Galatasaray's success is a meaningful indication that our country is determined to compete with the world in every area," said newly elected President Ahmet Necdet Sezer in a statement. The match was preceded by street battles between English and Turkish fans in Copenhagen in wich at least five people were seriously hurt. "Copenhagen, which gives its name to the EU's democracy criteria, was the scene of displays of violence by barbarians using sport as an excuse," said the daily Radikal. "Both the English and Turkish fighters rained down what could have been deadly blows on their rivals."

Istanbul erupts in celebration after soccer victory

ISTANBUL, May 17 (Reuters)(DS) - The centre of Istanbul erupted in celebration on Wednesday night when local team Galatasaray became the first Turkish side to win a top flight European soccer competition. Fans let off fireworks, banged drums, sang patriotic songs and waved flags to celebrate Galatasaray's win in the UEFA cup final in Copenhagen against Arsenal. "The English, the world knows them, knows who they are," said one young man, Gultekin Uluc, after Galatasaray won the match on a penalty shootout. "We are Turkish and this is very important for us so the world can see what we can do." Thousands packed the central Taksim Square, where large screens had relayed the match live. Normal time ended with no score, but Galatasaray won 4-1 on penalties. Pop music and patriotic songs pounded from loudspeakers as crowds danced and waved sparklers, chanting "Galatasaray Cim-Bom-Bom", the warcry of the team that had just completed a unique treble of the Turkish league and cup and the UEFA Cup. Turkish club rivalries had been forgotten for the night. "I am a Fenerbahce fan, but tonight I am delighted," said one elderly man, a supporter of another major club based across the Bosphorus strait on the Asian side of Istanbul. In the capital, Ankara, cars drove through the streets honking their horns, red Turkish flags with white crescent and star trailing from their windows. The same scene would have been acted out throughout the country. "They are the pride of Turkey," said one man, cooking meatballs on a grill on Taksim square. "There is only one Galatasaray anywhere." A few gunshots were heard close to the square, a regular feature of such celebrations in Turkey. But there was no sign of any trouble. In Denmark, at least five fans were hurt in fighting before the kick-off. As the crowd swelled and the square filled, green laser beams played across the sky. Young men dashed through the chanting and cheering masses waving giant red and yellow Galatasaray flags. State television flashed across its screens "The cup is in Turkey" and "Thank you Galatasaray". Police set up barriers, sealing the square to traffic. Two English soccer fans were stabbed to death on Taksim Square in April before a semi-final UEFA Cup match between Galatasaray and Leeds United.

Galatasaray win Turkish league title

ISTANBUL, May 14 (Reuters)(DS) - Galatasaray won the Turkish league title on Sunday for the fourth consecutive time, leaving only their UEFA Cup final against Arsenal between them and a historic treble. Second-placed Besiktas lost 3-1 at home to Fenerbahce in Istanbul on Sunday evening, leaving Galatasaray with an unassailable six-point lead at the top of the first division with one game left to play. Galatasaray have already retained the Turkish Cup. Coach Fatih Terim's team of Turks, Romanians and Brazilians has dominated Turkish soccer in recent years and has had a giant-slaying season in European competition. On Monday they are expected to fly to Copenhagen ahead of Wednesday's UEFA Cup final against England's Arsenal. Success on the field is marred only by reports of financial trouble at the Istanbul club. The club's international striker Hakan Sukur was quoted on Sunday as saying that Galatasaray had not paid their players. "It's true that we haven't been able to get our money for eight months," the Milliyet newspaper quoted Sukur as saying. "But money is not everything. We play for our love of Galatasaray." A Galatasaray official declined to comment on the report. It was not clear whether Hakan Sukur was referring to regular wages, lump sums agreed before the start of the season or to bonuses owed to players for the team's recent run of victories at home and in European competition. That run came to an end on Friday when Galatasaray lost 1-0 to lowly league opposition Altay in the western city of Izmir. Coach Terim had fielded a weakened side to rest key players ahead of the UEFA Cup final. Turkish media have reported that Galatasaray have financial problems. The club has started a sales campaign, trying to sell official shirts and merchandise to fans ahead of the UEFA Cup final. "We talked to the chairman. He said all the problems would be solved by May 21. We believe him," Hakan Sukur said. Coach Terim told reporters last week the club needed sounder finances if it wanted to stake a place among Europe's best clubs. Sukur also warned against taking the Altay result as a guide to Galatasaray's form. "There is no way it's an indictator for the Arsenal match. We are all excited by the final. Our fans should not worry, we'll be celebrating as champions on our return," Hakan said.

Galatasaray take Turkish flag into UEFA Cup final

LEEDS, England April 20 (Reuters)(DS) - Galatasaray became the first Turkish side to reach a final in the 45 years of European club competition after drawing 2-2 with Leeds United in a highly emotive UEFA Cup semifinal second leg at Elland Road on Thursday. Leading 2-0 from the first leg, Galatasaray made the perfect start on their way to wrapping up an aggregate 4-2 win when Hakan Sukur was brought down in the box by Jonathan Woodgate and Gheorghe Hagi converted the fifth minute penalty. Leeds fought back with Eirik Bakke heading home a 16th minute corner and Claudio Taffarel making important saves from Ian Harte and Bakke. Those proved crucial as a typical quick break saw Hagi fed Sukur for a stunning goal in the 42nd minute before Harry Kewell and Emre Belozoglu were both red carded in a fiery end to the first half. After a quieter start to the second period Leeds scored an equaliser in the 68th minute with Bakke again heading home a Wilcox corner. But it was not enough to stop Galatasaray booking a place in the final in Copenhagen on May 17 when they will face more English opposition in the form of Arsenal. Following the death of two Leeds fans in fighting before the first leg, Thursday's game had the biggest police presence of any match in English soccer history but, apart from some pre-match skirmishes between home fans and police, it passed off without any major crowd trouble.

Terim delighted to guide Galatasaray to first final

LEEDS, England April 20 (Reuters)(DS) - Coach Fatih Terim was delighted to lead the first ever Turkish team to a European final after Galatasaray held Leeds United to a 2-2 draw on Thursday to advance 4-2 on aggregate. The Istanbul side will face English club Arsenal in the final on May 17 and Terim said: "I feel like a father that has had his first child. I'm very emotional and happy. "I said that they are not my team anymore, they are Turkey's players. We want to be the leaders of Turkish football and push the Turkish game in Europe so others will follow.'' Leeds' bid to haul back a 2-0 first leg deficit was hit by an early penalty from Gheorghe Hagi and a brilliant Hakan Sukur strike just before the break. Eirik Bakke twice put Leeds level but dubious red cards for Leeds striker Harry Kewell and Galatasaray's Emre Belozoglu upset Leeds boss David O'Leary "I thought we could have got back into the game but we gave away two stupid goals. We did that in Turkey as well and you can't win through to a final when you give away four poor goals.'' He attacked on Galatasaray defender Gheorghe Popescu for holding his face after the challenge from Harry Kewell that brought a red card despite no contact being made. "The decision to send Harry Kewell off was a disgrace," said O'Leary. "Popescu should be ashamed of himself because he was a cheat.'' Galatasaray's veteran Romanian Hagi, who had an outstanding game said: "I am looking forward to playing Arsenal in the final. It is always tough against an English club but I think we can beat them." His Romanian compatriot Popescu denied he cheated on the sending off incident, and added: "I am looking forward to playing Arsenal in the final too. I have scored against them in the past when I got the winner for Tottenham against them when I was playing in England."

ISTANBUL, April 6th -   Striker Hakan Sukur scored with a glancing header in the 12´ minute to put his side in front and the team of Leed United were always struggling after Capone scored the 2-0 for Galatasaray. The victory denied the Turks on a number of occasions.

Galatasaray cruise past Mallorca to semifinals

ISTANBUL, March 23 (Reuters) - Turkish champions Galatasaray swept into the UEFA Cup semifinals in style on Thursday, beating Mallorca 2-1 after trouncing them 4-1 away. It was only the second time the Turkish side had progressed so far in a European cup competition and thousands of fans poured on to the streets in celebration. Brazilian striker Capone put the Istanbul side ahead, scoring from a cross from Romanian midfielder Gheorghe Hagi. The Mallorcan defence watched as the ball bounced off one post, skidded along the line and went in at the far corner. Driven on by characteristically raucous supporters, prolific scorer Hakan Sukur put Galatasaray in the driving seat with a second goal just after halftime. But the Spaniards were spurred into action in the second half with striker Carlos Dominguez lobbing an overhead goal from an Ariel Ibagaza cross into the net. The entry of Yugoslav winger Jovan Stankovic in the 70th minute did little to help Mallorca and the final straw for them came when Italian referee Stefano Braschi sent their coach Fernando Vasquez into the stands for arguing with an offside decision. Thousands of jubilant Turks celebrated the victory on the streets, dancing in the main squares and blaring car horns as fireworks exploded overhead. Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim put the win down to hard work. "The secret of our success is a good team which believes, struggles and works together," he said. "We don't believe in magic or luck, we work with facts. "Galatasaray has set itself a goal and is working towards this goal. No victory in history is a coincidence," he said. Terim said he now had his sights set on lifting the cup and would not be intimidated by any of the likely opponents. "We set our goal a long time ago. We said we want the highest prize -- the cup," he said. "No matter who we draw, we will prepare in the same way and go for it."

Galatasaray coach puts win down to hard work

ISTANBUL, March 23 (Reuters) - Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim put his side's progress into the semifinals of the UEFA Cup down to the fighting spirit of his players after beating Real Mallorca 2-1 for a 6-2 aggregate on Thursday. "The secret of our success is a good team which believes, struggles and works together," he said. "We don't believe in magic or luck, we work with facts. His team blocked out the Spanish side with solid defensive work for the first 15 minutes, only breaking out after getting the measure of their opponents. "After the first quarter of an hour we created a series of good positions right up until the end," he said "We had 10 clear chances." Despite the success Terim said he saw room for improvement in his side. "Galatasaray can do better, our game can become more mature and more accomplished," he said. Terim said he now had his sights set on lifting the cup and would not be intimidated by any of the likely opponents - Arsenal, Leeds United or Racing Lens. "We set our goal a long time ago. We said we want the highest prize -- the cup," he said. "No matter who we draw, we will prepare in the same way and go for it. "Galatasaray have set ourselves a goal and are working towards this goal. No victory in history is a coincidence," he said. Real Mallorca boss Fernando Vazquez, expelled to the stands minutes before the end of the match for arguing an offside decision, said the tie had been settled in Spain. "After the 4-1 result everything was decided," he said. He admitted he had rested his best players for their league match against Valencia which was brought forward to Saturday to allow Valencia's Argentine midfielder Kily Gonzalez to play and still make it home for a World Cup qualifier. "Bearing in mind Saturday's match I didn't want the players to work too hard," said Vazquez. "We have rested during our time in Istanbul. We have had a good time. I kept some players out of the game and it has been positive for us." Gracious in defeat, he wished his Turkish opponents luck. "Galatasaray were well-organised," he said. "They counter attacked well and maintained a good defence. This bodes well for them. Of course we are sad to lose, but we wish them good luck."

Galatasaray crush Mallorca 4-1 in Spain to eye semis

PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain, March 16 (Reuters) - Galatasaray thrashed Real Mallorca 4-1 in front of a stunned home crowd on the Spanish island on Thursday, virtually guaranteeing the Turkish champions a place in the UEFA Cup semifinals. Mallorca had beaten Monaco 4-1 in the home leg of the last round and looked the better side for most of the first half of the quarter-final, first leg game. But two finely chipped goals either side of half-time put Galatasaray firmly in the driving seat. After a neat exchange of passes, Arif Erdem lobbed Mallorca keeper Leo Franco from the edge of the box to give the Turks the lead after 44 minutes. Galatasary made it 2-0 shortly after the re-start when Emre Belozoglu skilfully controlled a high ball and, with the Mallorca defence watching, turned and sent a perfect chip over Franco who was only slightly off his line. Driven on by their vociferous supporters, Galatasary extended their lead after 58 minutes when Mallorca's defence failed to cut out a long ball and Hakan Sukur ran on to score. Mallorca, last season's beaten finalists in the European Cup Winners Cup, looked shattered as Okan Buruk rounded Franco to make it four after a neat pass from Erdem seven minutes later. With 12 minutes to go, Lauren Bisan claimed a consolation goal for the Spaniards, firing home after Brazilian World Cup keeper Claudio Taffarel could only parry a shot. Mallorca's Yugoslavian winger Jovan Stankovic, who created several chances for the home side the first half, hit the post with a free-kick in the dying minutes but it was Galatasaray's night. In the last round they beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in Germany then shut-up shop in the goalless second leg. They should have little difficulty securing the result they need next Thursday to take them into a European semi for only the second time. The first was a 5-1 aggregate defeat by Steaua Bucharest in the 1989 European Cup.

Galatasaray stubled Dortmund

DORTMUND, Germany, March 2nd (Reuters) - Galatasaray sent Borussia Dortmund deeper into crisis by outplaying the Germans 2-0 in a UEFA Cup fourth round, first leg match on Thursday. Troubled Dortmund hardly created a chance in a match clearly dominated by their Turkish visitors.
Striker Hakan Sukur put the Istanbul club ahead, hitting the top corner of the net from a fine pass by Arif Erdem in the 33rd minute. Romanian playmaker Gheorghe Hagi raced into the box unchallenged just before the break and his deflected shot left Dortmund goalkeeper Jens Lehmann no chance. Cheered on by a strong Turkish contingent in Dortmund's stadium, Galatasaray threatened after eight minutes with a header from Erdem which Lehmann managed to block. Inspired by veteran Hagi, who sparked most their moves, they came close again two minutes later through Erdem, whose shot from outside the penalty area flew just wide.
Disappointed Dortmund fans started leaving the stadium with over 15 minutes left and many had gone when their Galatasaray counterparts invaded the pitch to celebrate after the final whistle. "The way we play at the moment is not good enough, it's as simple as that," Dortmund coach Bernd Krauss said. "We were not aggressive enough and Galatasaray were the better team."

Galatasary score late equaliser against Bologna

BOLOGNA (Itlaly), Nov. 23rd (Reuters) - Hakan Sukur headed an 83rd minute equaliser as Galatasaray salvaged a 1-1 draw with Bologna in their UEFA Cup third round first leg match on Tuesday. While the Turkish club's fightback was not as spectacular as the one they produced against AC Milan earlier this month when they scored twice in the dying minutes to win 3-2 and dump the Italian giants out of the Champions League, it gave them a vital away goal for the second leg. Giuseppe Signori had given Bologna the lead in the 68th minute with a low shot which took a deflection off defender Hakan Unsal on its way to goal. Galatasaray had the better of the first half but Bologna dominated the second and almost grabbed a winner in injury time when Carlo Nervo had a shot cleared off the line by Brazilian defender Capone.
"It's a shame because we played a very good second half and created four or five good chances," Bologna coach Francesco Guidolin said. "They had one real chance after the break and they scored their equaliser from it." Signori's goal continued his fine run against Galatasaray's former Brazilian internatioanl goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel. The little Italian striker scored the first Serie A goal of his career against Taffarel in the 1991-92 season when Signori was playing for Foggia and the Brazilian was in goal for Parma. Signori's first Serie A hat-trick also came at Taffarel's expense in a 5-2 win for Lazio over Parma.

AC Milan end with nothing after Galatasaray defeat

ISTANBUL, Nov. 3rd (Reuters) - Former European champions AC Milan, heading for the last 16 in the Champions League with five minutes to go, ended with nothing when Galatasaray struck twice to beat them 3-2 on Wednesday. Leading 2-1, Milan had looked like securing second place in group H and a berth in the next phase of the Champions League. But two late goals deprived them even of a consolation place in the next round of the UEFA Cup. With less than five minutes to go Hakan Sukur equalised with a header. Then Umit Davala snatched the UEFA Cup place for Galatasaray and consigned the Italians to the bottom of the group in the dying seconds with a penalty after Hakan Sukur had been brought down in the box. After the final whistle jubilant Turks took the streets and drove through Turkey's largest city, sounding klaxons and waving the clubs red and yellow coloured flags from car windows. "We deserved the Champions League but we ought to be grateful for having put a giant like Milan under our belts and moving on to the UEFA Cup," Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim. The defeat was a shattering blow for the Italian club, five times winners of the competition and among the favourites this season. Milan had taken the lead after 20 minutes when Liberian striker George Weah slotted the ball in from Andriy Shevchenko's cross. Brazilian defender Capone equalised in the 27th minute with a shot through a crowded penalty area. Federico Giunti beat Brazilian goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel after 51 minutes to put Milan back in front.

Galatasaray salvage pride to break Hertha

BERLIN, Oct. 26th (Reuters) - Galatasaray salvaged Turkish pride and gave Champions League newcomers Hertha Berlin a lesson in grit and application on Wednesday as they came from behind to crush the Germans 4-1. Turkey striker Hakan Sukur was the man who did the damage, cancelling out Kjetil Rekdal's first-half penalty just after the break and putting his side ahead from a corner 20 minutes later. Two late strikes gave the Turks a first victory in the competition this season and left the Berliners needing a point at Chelsea next week to be sure of finishing in the top two in group H ahead of AC Milan.
As in last week's 1-0 home win over the Italians, it was the tireless Dariusz Wosz who made the breakthrough for Hertha, turning Ahmet in the box only to be felled by the left back. Captain Rekdal stroked the resulting penalty inches past the diving Claudio Taffarel in the 35th minute and the Germans looked set for for a third straight home win in the group phase. But Galatasaray, urged on by a vocal section of Berlin's big Turkish community were always a threat and the inability to defend a lead that has dogged Roeber's side in the Bundesliga caught up with them. Three minutes after the interval Belozoglu Emre robbed a defender and broke down the left side of the box to put in a short cross that Sukur headed home from close range. Hakan Sukur poked home his second from a 66th minute corner and substitute winger Kerimoglu Tugay made sure of the win, calmly sliding the ball past Kiraly after the breaking Erdem Arif found him unmarked in the box in 81 minutes. Striker Ilija Aracic, on for the largely anonymous Michael Preetz, could do little for Hertha in the last quarter-hour and Buruk Okan put the icing on the Turkish delight with a cheeky lob on the break in injury time to make it four. "The fact we won 4-1 shows we knew how to take our chances," Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim said. "It was a tough game but we deserved to win."

Galatasaray fight back after early setbacks

ISTANBUL, Sept. 15th (Reuters) - Galatasaray fought back from conceding two goals in the opening 12 minutes to draw 2-2 with Champions League debutants Hertha Berlin in their group H match on Wednesday. Hertha, playing in Europe for the first time for 21 years, silenced the Turkish crowd with their opening burst, resulting in goals by Michael Preetz and Dariusz Wosz. But Galatasaray replied with a delightful individual goal in the 21st minute and an 89th minute penalty by Gheorghe Hagi.. Sukur's reply was a clever lob over Hertha goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly which the striker collected and knocked into the empty net. The Turks applied constant pressure from then on and always looked likely to find an equaliser. "At least we didn't lose, we've got one point. That's some compensation I suppose," Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim said. Sukur had a couple of half chances and Galatasaray thought they were hard done by when Swiss referee Urs Meier disallowed a goal by Everton Bruno who kicked the ball from under Kiraly's outstretched hands. The last gasp equaliser came when Hagi converted a spot kick after the sending-off of Hertha's Kostas Konstantinidis following a goalmouth clash. "It's very difficult to find yourself two goals down so early on," said coach Terim. "With Hakan's goal we found our feet somewhat. But we equalised far too late to give us a chance of winning."
